Marquee Yearbook

Through the Marquee, I have fostered and further cultivated my love for journalism through interviewing, creating a variety of mods, and writing features. During my time on the publication, I have progressed to leadership positions that allowed me to mentor peers to learn the inner workings of the publication.

#GreenforMatthew

After the passing of a student's brother, others took to social media for outreach, calling for students to wear green to school in honor of him. The next morning, hallways were filled by a sea of green. Within less than 24 hours, the school rallied together to support a fellow student during this time of grief.

She Had it Coming

A theater student at my school attended an arts-focused summer program where she performed the lead role in Chicago. My angle for the feature was breaking down the different aspects of preparing for a show including the auditions, rehearsals, and on-stage performance. I found that having the feature separated by section allowed for organization throughout the piece which was beneficial since I wanted to cover the different aspects of her experience at the program.

"I Am Beautiful Enough for Me."

I wrote this feature for the Marquee yearbook during my sophomore year. This was the first feature I wrote for the publication which was a challenge, but also an immense learning experience. This feature got me interested in journalism as a method of vulnerable and raw storytelling. This feature follows the modeling career of a former student at my school and the factor her race plays in the industry. Through the interview, the student discussed her journey of self-acceptance and self-love with an increase in inner confidence. This confidence was previously stifled due to the lack of representation of Black voices in the industry. Through her work in modeling and hopes to pursue additional passions to reshape the industry, she aims to be the voice she never had growing up.

Backstage Presence

Since my school is heavily art-focused, there are monthly concerts and performances put on by the different majors. This blurb/mini feature follows the process of two theater students journey working behind the scenes on a dance concert. One student was the stage manager to set and called the cues for the show. The other student was the head lighting designer and set the lighting for each piece formed during the show. While interviewing, my emphasis was on the preparation and in-the-moment emotions going through the student's heads while working the show.

Rained Out

Due to unpredictable Florida weather, numerous swim practices and swim meets were canceled for the swim team on campus. I wanted to focus this mini copy on the impact practice cancellations have on swimmers as it relates to their endurance, technical skill, and confidence heading into meets.
